Hovenia Dulcis: Evidence from Clinical Research Shows Promise
Hi everyone,
This is Bopyo, Co-founder of Early Bright New York.
Today, I’d like to review a research paper that discusses the key ingredient in one of our products: Hovenia Dulcis extract. When we think of "Hovenia Dulcis," we often associate it with a quick hangover remedy. However, a recently published clinical study reveals that it holds potential for much more than that. I’d like to share my thoughts and insights on the findings of the study with you.

A Wake-Up Call from the Body, and Nature’s Gift
Five years ago, I hit a low point in my health. It got so bad that I had to leave my job and reevaluate my entire life. Between workplace conflicts, burnout, and eventually finding myself on an operating table, I learned an important lesson: never ignore the signals your body sends you.
That turning point made me prioritize balance in every aspect of my life—body, mind, and lifestyle. One of the ways I pursued this balance was by looking into the power of nature, and that’s how I discovered Hovenia Dulcis.

Clinical Research Unveils New Potential of Hovenia Dulcis
A recent randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial explored the effects of a drink made with Hovenia Dulcis (HD), Pueraria lobata (kudzu root), and glutathione yeast extract on hangover symptoms compared to a placebo.
Here’s a quick summary of the key findings:
Blood Alcohol Levels
Both the Hovenia Dulcis beverage (HDB) and the Hovenia + Pueraria blend (HDPB) showed significantly lower blood alcohol levels at 0.5 and 6 hours after consumption compared to the placebo.
The HDPB group (with added Pueraria lobata) showed the most pronounced reduction.
Blood Acetaldehyde Levels
The HDPB group also had relatively lower blood acetaldehyde levels at the 6-hour mark.
Since acetaldehyde is a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism, this suggests that the blend could help the body eliminate it more quickly.
Safety Evaluation
Blood tests (liver and kidney function), urine tests, blood pressure, and heart rate showed no significant adverse effects.
Although some minor blood pressure variations were observed, they were not clinically significant.
Hangover Scale (AHS) Survey
Participants rated hangover symptoms like thirst, fatigue, and headache on a 7-point scale. While there were some differences, the changes were not statistically significant.
However, the trend of reduced blood alcohol and acetaldehyde levels is worth noting.
Synergy of Pueraria Lobata and Glutathione Yeast Extract
One interesting finding was the enhanced effect when Hovenia Dulcis extract was combined with Pueraria lobata (kudzu root) or glutathione yeast extract (GY).
According to the research:
Pueraria lobata has antioxidant properties, promotes blood circulation, and supports liver health.
Glutathione yeast extract (GY) is a powerful antioxidant that boosts immunity and aids in liver detoxification.
The study suggests that these two ingredients work synergistically with Hovenia Dulcis extract to help eliminate toxins more effectively. While more research is needed, these results are promising.
Bridging the Gap Between Research and Everyday Life
It’s easy to look at clinical data and think, “Wow, this drink can completely cure hangovers!” But the reality isn’t that simple. In real life, individual factors such as body type, drinking patterns, and overall health play a huge role.
Research setting: Standardized conditions (e.g., controlled alcohol intake, strict timing, lab settings).
Everyday setting: Variables like drink type, food intake, and personal habits make every experience unique.
For this reason, I recommend viewing Hovenia Dulcis and Pueraria blends as helpful tools rather than magic cures. They’re a great option to support recovery, but they shouldn’t replace a healthy lifestyle.
Early Bright New York and Hovenia Dulcis
When I founded Early Bright New York, I was deeply curious about the potential of Hovenia Dulcis. It’s a relatively unknown ingredient in the U.S. market, so I’ve been exploring ways to introduce its benefits to people in an accessible and meaningful way.
Learning about this clinical research reassures me that we’re on the right path. While it will take time to educate people about Hovenia Dulcis in the U.S., I believe it can make a real difference with consistent effort in product development and awareness.
Choosing Wellness for Both Body and Mind
Lastly, I want to emphasize that no ingredient—no matter how beneficial—can make up for unhealthy habits. If drinking becomes excessive, it can lead to long-term harm, no matter how many hangover remedies you use. I know this firsthand from my own experiences—losing your health shakes every aspect of your life.
So instead of thinking, “I can drink as much as I want because I have Hovenia Dulcis or Pueraria,” I hope we can embrace a healthier drinking culture while exploring natural remedies as supportive tools.
